Alexander Wang: Gray Matter

Kick off, indeed. We were very excited to start Fashion Week with Gilt Groupe sponsoring Alexander Wang’s sports-tinted Spring/Summer 2010 show at Pier 94 on the Hudson River. The pier’s vast space was a perfect venue for Alexander’s innovative designs.
We went backstage to check out all the looks before they hit the runway. The pre-show scene was surprisingly calm as I watched some of my favorite models — Frankie Rayder, Angela Lindvall and Mirte Maas — getting primped and preened by the amazing MAC cosmetics team.
In the front row I caught up with my friends Nina Garcia from Marie Claire and Dani Stahl from Nylon. I also chatted with a new face on the front row, 13-year-old blogger Tavi of Style Rookie . She was quite the celebrity at the show! Time Traveler’s Wife Rachel McAdams was also in the front row, alongside singing sensation Janelle Monáe, who was rocking a pretty amazing hairdo!
Then the bass started pumping and the models started strutting. I loved how Alexander transformed basic gray sweatshirts into fused, draped masterpieces. His take on athletic clothing and the various incarnations of khaki, denim and army canvas were inventive and playful, exactly what you'd expect from a designer who joyfully sprinted onto the catwalk at the end of the show, flashing a massive smile.
