Jean Shop: A Case of the Blues

Jean Shop: A Case of the Blues

Specializing in Japanese selvage, Jean Shop is the place to find the best denim in every incarnation, from raw to washed to dyed. Denim has been the hottest textile since the ‘50s, and some people are willing to pay thousands for original, unworn jeans from the early days of this now-iconic blue pant.

  • But knowing what looks and feels good is only half the battle. Here are a few terms to impress your friends and shop-peeps alike:

  • Selvage: Commonly refers to denim that has been produced on a shuttle loom, which creates fabric that is significantly narrower than denim from a projectile loom. In selvage jeans, you will see the actual edge of the fabric, which looks great when you cuff your jeans.
  • Rise: The length of fabric from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. Hence the terms low-rise and high-rise.
  • Weight: Denim can be super-light, like in eight-ounce fabric (that’s weight per yard), and it can weight as much as 14 ounces but gets stiffer with each extra ounce.
