S.T. Dupont: Got A Light?

Whether you smoke or not, a lighter is something every Gilt Man should carry. You never know when a lady might start fumbling through her purse for the ever-elusive book of matches or when a candle may extinguish itself over dinner. S.T. Dupont isn’t your everyday Bic, and neither are the manners you should use when impressing that unsuspecting stranger. Here’s how the Gilt Man does it.
When using a lighter, it’s always polite to light others’ cigarettes before your own. Ladies first, of course – except when using matches you should light your own cigarette first, to protect others from the unpleasant sulfur. It’s the gentlemanly thing to do.

American cancer deaths from smoking average around 200,000 per year. You would be better off to find a post about table etiquette and criticize there, because being a fat slob is far deadlier in America than being a smoker. Enough of the tobacco nazi-ism. If the lady is going to smoke, I am going to be polite and offer her a light, not scold as if I were her father and she were 9 years old. Nice tip about the matches.
