Stroll in Style

Stroll in Style

Prepping for a baby’s arrival is no easy task, especially when you’re a first-time parent. We at Gilt Children want to help. To simplify your shopping, we’ve partnered with the experts at TheBump.com to create an exclusive baby-gear sale just for you. Find all the essentials you and your little one will need to hit the road in style, from twin strollers to luxurious blankets. The event starts Tuesday, April 6, but here’s a sneak peek of three of TheBump’s favorite items.

1. BabyBjorn Active Carrier

We’ve been fans of the brand for a while, and love BabyBjorn carriers for their comfort, durability and versatility. And let’s be honest, they look pretty cool, too.

2. UPPAbaby G-Luxe umbrella stroller
Every parent needs a lightweight, portable umbrella stroller as an alternative to a big clunky model, both for traveling and for when baby gets bigger and wants to walk a bit on her own. We give the G-Luxe two thumbs up for its reliability.

3. OiOi convertible diaper bag
A stylish diaper bag that doubles as a personal carry-all is a must for any parent looking to save her back undue stress. OiOi’s offerings are lightweight, have tons of pocket space and are easy to clean, yet still manage to stay wonderfully chic.

Get rolling with the Stroll in Style sale starting Tuesday, April 6, at 12 ET. And for more new-parent essentials, see TheBump.com’s top-10 mom must-haves.

So excited for this to happen on Gilt! You all rock, thanks.

As a parent who's been wearing her baby for now almost 20 months, I have to admit being disappointed at the Baby Bjorn being presented as a comfortable, durable and versatile baby carrier. What other baby wearing option have you looked at for as a comparison? Firstly, in terms of comfort, it is probably the worst carrier on the market, both for the parent and the infant. In baby wearing circles, these are called "crotch danglers" for a reason: not only do they not offer any support for the child, but they put lots of pressure on his spine. Also, there couldn't be any worse than putting a child in the forward facing position (away from the wearer), as then there is even more pressure on the back of the baby, in a very unnatural, unsupported position. For the parent, a Baby Bjorn remains an uncomfortable carrier compared to other options, putting lots of pressure on shoulders and back. Much better options in that respect are Ergo, Mei Teis, Sling Rings (not the dangerous bag slings though!), OMTs, half-buckles, and wraps (especially the woven kind, such as Didymos, Vatanai, Girasol, Natibaby, Lana, BBSlen, to name only a very few brands). As for durability, maybe it's true that they last a long time, but they still cannot be used as soon as the infant reaches 25 pounds. Basically, they become useless after the child turns 1-year old. In contrast, woven baby wraps, especially linen-blend wraps, remain very comfortable until a child weighs 45 pounds. And they last a very long time, being made of very strong and resistant fabrics. They are often passed on from generation to generation... Versatile, a Baby Bjorn? How so? There are only two possible positions for the child: parent facing or front-facing. Both positions are on the belly of the parent anyway. In contrast, most other baby carriers can be worn both on the back and the front of the parent. And wraps especially can be worn in so many different carries: front cross carries, back cross carriers, rucks tied in different ways, rebozzo, kangaroo, double hammock in back or front, etc. The list is very long. As for the cute factor, a Baby Bjorn is pretty basic and boring compared to other carriers. Nothing luxurious about it either. It's just like a back pack... In contrast, other carriers are offered in so many different fabrics, from silk to cashmere, through linen, wool and cotton. And the choice of prints and colors is endless... For instance, Didymos releases a few limited editions each month, and lots of them become collectible items, with market value greatly increasing over time. A baby wearer trying other options rarely goes back to the Baby Bjorn...

I'll second the disdain for the Bjorn. And, I know many doctors will NOT recommend the Bjorn for anyone with even the slightest back issue. I have never had a back issue ever and NEVER used my Bjorn. I found the ERGO to be the best! I hiked off 40 pounds with my newborn in the Ergo, but note, you must have the newborn insert to use it for newborns. In the Ergo, I was even able to nurse while hiking because the newborn faces in and there's skin-to-skin contact. And, because its skin-to-skin, newborns fall asleep easy because they're close to the sound of the parent's heartbeat.

will you have any double strollers for the stroller sale?

By sofiabellasmommy on April 4, 2010 at 10:26:44 PM

I also add my concern regarding the Baby Bjorn. We had one for our first baby, and I couldn't carry him without serious backpain, in it, beyond about 14 lbs. Also, I was really horrified to learn that pediatricians don't like how the baby's weight is supported at his/her crotch, which isn't comfortable or healthy. I do, on the otherhand, LOVE my Ergo, which I now use for our second child. I can carry her for hours in it, without backpain, and she's now nearly 19 lbs. I anticipate being able to use it to carry her well past this weight without discomfort. Also, with the Ergo, my daughter's weight is distributed across her bottom, as she actually sits in this carrier, rather than being suspended by her crotch, in it. The Baby Bjorn is perhaps more streamlined and stylish, but seriously, you can't sacrifice everything to style - especially your baby's well-being, and your back.

Melissa, Has anyone thought about nursing clothing? That's what I desperately need!

By x3zn26mazan36xraaf4c on April 4, 2010 at 11:10:21 PM

I really hope there's a double stroller like the BOB duallie revolution or Phil and Ted's!

By aquinn83 on April 4, 2010 at 11:25:25 PM

So thrilled to see all of the great maternity names you are planning on having 4/27 - but see one missing ! the most amazing dress ...Pouch's The Versatile Dress - truly has been the best investment I made 3 months ago -- one dress that can be worn in 7+ styles - and so great for traveling too! I am now looking to buy the Maxi from their collection. Would be super to see that on Gilt!

some people just go on and on and funny thing...no one is that interested

By kriskenmcd on April 5, 2010 at 09:48:00 AM

Agreed, using Gilt as a forum for why you personally don't care for a particular item they'll be showcasing is petty and ridiculous. I'm looking forward to these fabulous sales!!

By ctroxell on April 5, 2010 at 10:42:01 AM

This is one of the reasons I don't shop anywhere else anymore. I hope you continue to provide high quality, fashionable ware for children as well as parents. If is the case I will continue to spend my money buying items from you for EVER!!! P.S. I love the fact that you don't charge us with delivery charges for returns. Don't you ever change Gilt Group!!!

I wish you shipped to Canada. We aren't too far... sucks. Especially since all the other discounts sites ship to us. PLEASE.... I WANT TO ORDER BABY STUFF

By delucakelly on April 6, 2010 at 11:18:42 AM

To kriskenmcd and ctroxell: I'd venture to say it's even more petty and ridiculous to write against posts you don't like in a blog such as this one. The purpose of my post, and probably of the other ones who wrote that they don't like BBjorn, was to bring to Melissa Keswin's attention the fact that there are other, safer and more stylish options that could be offered instead of the seen-everywhere BBjorn. That's not petty nor is it ridiculous. It's communicating a need, as a client, to a company who, I'm sure, is listening. There is nothing wrong with broadening one's horizons...
