5 Things to Know About… Under Armour

Under Armour is one of those companies with such a fun history that the more you know about the brand, the more you love it. Founded in 1996 by college athlete Kevin Plank in his grandmother’s basement, the high-tech sport clothing line quickly skyrocketed to popularity thanks to an unwavering dedication to its mission and a few very helpful pop cultural moments that brought it into the public eye.

We’re very excited to bring Under Armour to with a sale in which we’ll be launching the brand’s fashion-forward, ultra-flattering new Studiolux Noir collection weeks before it hits stores. Designed with the female athlete in mind, the body-hugging styles are as high-performance as they are hip. Read on for five fun facts about the brand, and then shop Under Armour StudioLux Noir on Saturday, September 15, at noon ET, on!

1. Though Under Armour first landed on public radars via a photo of Oakland Raiders quarterback Jeff George in USA Today (and got a second boost when Jamie Foxx donned one of the brand’s jock straps in the Oliver Stone movie Any Given Sunday), the years that followed found the brand focusing on female athletes. A recent commercial featured Olympic-winning Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn, Gold Medal Sprinter Natasha Hastings, and pro soccer player Lauren Cheney.

2. J. Lo sported head-to-toe Under Armour Studio Lux Noir in the action-packed video for her fierce 2012 single, “Follow the Leader.”

3. In April 2012, Under Armour Women’s launched “What’s Beautiful,” a competition that invites women to redefine beauty by accomplishing personal fitness goals. As women post proof of their journey (there’s a Facebook-like community forum) they become eligible for amazing prizes, such as becoming one of the new faces of the brand and having their lives sponsored by Under Armour for a year full of elite training, luxurious spa treatments, and other fabulous perks.

4. Under Armour has charitable collections that benefit breast cancer research and provide assistance for wounded veterans and their families.

5. A long list of professional athletes sport Under Armour gear when they compete, including Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Cam Newton, Karate World Champion Allison Mack, and celeb swimmer Michael Phelps.

11 comments & Katie Couric Celebrate The Traveling Red Dress

Are you familiar with the story of The Traveling Red Dress? Originally conceived by Jenny Lawson of The Bloggess as a metaphor for reclaiming her self-confidence and indulging secret whims — which took the form of donning an impractical red ballgown just, well, because — The Red Dress has since blossomed into a global movement.

Lawson’s custom-made dress has since traversed the globe and been modeled by countless women looking for a jolt of the extraordinary. Because we love anything that encourages women to embrace their inner beauty queens, Gilt joined Jenny on Katie Couric’s new daytime show Katie, which aired today, and gave red dresses to everyone in the audience. We even gave Katie a red Ava & Aiden sheath to wear on the show and she looked fabulous! And since we’d hate for our members to miss out on the magic, we’re also hosting a fabulous sale on some of our favorite dresses of the moment — all in various shades of red, of course.

Click here to shop The Little Red Dress sale on on Thursday, September 12 at noon ET — and don’t forget to tell your friends!

How to Create the Perfect Fall Look with Paige Novick Jewelry

Bold. Geometric. Glam. Paige Novick’s jewelry is unmistakably modern, but the designer’s sharp, clean lines and restrained opulence evokes everything from Art Deco architecture to the haute-disco style of Studio 54. Chunky bracelets, high-drama earrings, cool cocktail rings — we love it all!

The subtle black-and-white pendant adorning The Mini Sadie Two Toned Necklace would lend a sophisticated touch of ’40s flair to the monochromatic jewel tones we’re seeing everywhere this fall.

Another huge trend for fall? Cobalt everything. We’re in love with Novick’s medium-sized cobalt studs, which deliver just the right dose of fall’s favorite color, prettily accented with crystals and gold.

And if you’re enamored of all things neon (guilty as charged!) you’ll lust after the Sadie cuff, which pairs bright yellow with somber grey and matte gold, updating the trend perfectly for the coming season.

Sound like your kind of style? Shop Jewelry by Paige Novick & More on Wednesday, August 29, at 9pm ET, on
