Gilty in Philly
Wednesday November 18, 2009
Ritz East Movie Theater & Steven Starr’s Tangerine
Elaborate costumes and, in the end, a love story, set the tone for production studio’s Apparition’s The Young Victoria, whose Philadelphia screening Gilt hosted last night. A period piece about the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign, the film stars Emily Blunt in her first leading role. The movie’s royal setting proved to be a winning match for the people of Philadelphia, who were all dressed up WITH a place to go – the screening’s after-party at Tangerine, Steven Starr’s sexy lounge and bar. ... Juma: Attention to Detail
- Juma is a newer brand from Toronto that designs some really great menswear. They find subtle ways to make a statement – the clothes stand out, but only if you're paying attention. Gilt Man caught up with designers Jamil and Alia Juma to see what drives them to break the rules.
- What's the Juma look?
- We would describe our style as somewhat dark. The clothing we design is a reflection of our own personal style and taste. That helps keep it more authentic.
- Where do you look for inspiration?
- The inspiration is really our environment. We work and hang out with creative people. We look to them and their personal styles, mix it with our own, and then develop the collection. We evolve our look from season to season, updating it with common themes of androgyny and understatement.

Tufenkian Rugs: Armenian Dream
James Tufenkian loves beautiful things, and that includes his carpets: hand-knotted, high-design gems. The Armenian entrepreneur gave us the red-carpet treatment as we asked about his company, his designers, and whether he ever sets foot on these gorgeous creations.
- How would you describe Tufenkian Rugs?
- Integrity. My mission is to sell beautiful things of lasting value made by people who enjoy making them, to make sure those people profit from the sale, and to use the profits of the business to support non-profit causes. Designs and colors are created by our own team of designers working under my direction, and by our great group of licensed designers, and our carpets are crafted by artisanal weavers in Armenia, or by Tibetan refugees in Nepal.
- How many hours of work goes into one of your carpets?
- It takes four to five weavers about 3,000 hours to finish one nine-foot by 12-foot rug.... Read more

Get Set: Jetsetter
- When we launched Gilt in November 2007, we had grand plans for all the different luxury sales we could capture on our site. From the start we always wanted to sell luxury travel — hotel rooms and adventure, at a discount.
- So we got to work on Jetsetter, and last month the site got its very own tab on our navigation bar. Your Gilt Groupe sign-in will give you access to Jetsetter and its very special sales.
- To tell you more about how it works and why it’s so exciting, I’m going to hand you over to the inspired force behind Jetsetter, creative director Amy Ziff and CEO Drew Patterson. They really do bounce ideas off each other!
- Sincerely,
- Susan Lyne
- CEO
- Amy: Thank you, Susan. Hi, Drew. Tell me, how does Jetsetter fit the Gilt family?
- Drew: Gilt attracts fashion trendsetters and tastemakers, most of whom also like to travel. Providing them with unique travel ideas and opportunities seems obvious. I thought with Jetsetter we could make vacation planning easier and trips more affordable. ... Read more

Gilt Man San Francisco: Touchdown!
- What could be better than our Gilt Man event in San Francisco? Last Thursday, November 12, we had free grooming sessions, styling tips, tasty snacks and a 49ers game on the big screen at MR., a members-only barbershop and wine bar.
- San Francisco’s most eligible blokes from the Bachelors of San Francisco — including Adam Chetkowski, KP Englert, Ryan Jones, Erik Noland and Adam Steinhorn — hosted the party, outfitted from head-to-toe in Gilt Man attire. Guests enjoyed mini-sliders, Gilt Man-branded takeaways and, of course, everyone got their game on.

I'm Gilty: Samia
- Samia Arthur-Bentil was the picture of summer chic on the catwalk in this patterned minidress. We quizzed the pre-med student on what else she likes to wear.
- Tell us about your outfit.
- This dress by Mara Hoffman is really fun. I wore it with a pair of saddle pumps by Frye, and I got to show off a lovely CC Skye bag too. I felt young and trendy and super comfortable in the dress – it’s something I’d wear to a sunny afternoon garden party. It could work as a club outfit as well, but maybe with slightly lower heels!
- How would you describe your style philosophy?
- I call it urban-chic. It's a mish-mash of different items from different styles. There's hipster and urban-wear in my wardrobe, but also cutesy, girly items – plus a whole lot of black, denim and fun shoes.... Read more

Mario Badescu: Out with the Old
Sure, we all get better with age, but there’s nothing wrong with delaying the process a little, right? And one guy who began helping us many years ago is Mario Badescu. We chatted with Badescu’s lead aesthetician, Elena Arboleda, about how guys can improve their daily skin routine.
- What’s one thing you see men not doing that they really should?
- Masks are probably the most overlooked skincare products for guys. The benefits of using facial masks at home generally go unnoticed – particularly by men. Masks really add another element to your routine, whether it’s to cleanse, brighten or hydrate the skin. They’re also key in removing dead and damaged skin – letting the new and improved show through.
- Why should the gents get into a daily skincare routine?
- It’s so important to take care of the skin. The face is constantly exposed to the elements: sun, wind, cold weather, dry climates and humidity. Protecting your skin is essential – you just need products that are right for you.
