Timex: As Time Glows By

Timex: As Time Glows By

Almost 80 years ago, Timex gave us the first-ever Mickey Mouse clock. And who doesn’t remember rushing to Kmart to get their first Indiglo watch back in ’92? Innovative design and technology are what has kept this watchmaker in business for over 150 years. But how exactly do Timex dials keep their signature blue glow? The secret is in the paper-thing translucent film that covers the whole face of the watch. This film is activated by battery power and essentially serves as one big, see-thru light bulb.

Get enlightened in our Timex sale on Monday, February 8, at noon ET.

Sade's 'Love' Is King

It’s been a while since British songstress Sade serenaded us with her silky tones, warning us against the charms of the "Smooth Operator” and extolling the virtues of “The Sweetest Taboo.” Fitting, then, that the woman whose voice is the aural equivalent of luscious caramel is back in time to set the Valentine’s Day mood. On February 9, Epic will release Soldier of Love, Sade’s first album in 10 years. Gilt Home is giving you the chance to get all 10 tracks of this soul-and-jazz goodness a day earlier. That’s right, Gilt members get access to the disc everyone’s talking about (even those cranky critics at music bible Pitchfork, who gave it the thumbs-up). So dim the lights, get out a bottle of wine and enjoy the diamond life with these sexy tunes.

Update your playlist with Sade’s Soldier of Love on Monday, February 8, at 12 noon ET.

Scotch & Soda: Top Shelf

Scotch & Soda: Top Shelf

The guys at Scotch & Soda have been living the good life in Amsterdam for more than 20 years. Their goal: the best materials, the best fits and just enough of a twist to make them interesting. Speaking of twists, we can’t help but wish we were reaching for the perfect cocktail after a long day’s work. Here are our favorite Scotch concoctions:

Highland Fling: Nice and easy, this one’s for when you’ve just unbuttoned that top button:
2 ounces Scotch
1 ounce lemon juice
1 ounce water
1 tsp superfine sugar
Garnish with a lemon twist

Michael Kors: Behind the Scenes

In Michael Kors’ world, square-chinned men and women with entourages are always running into each other on yachts and private jets. A lifestyle we can all agree on. The clothes are crisp, American, and make you look like a million bucks (even if a bath is as close as you get to yachting). Gilt Man went behind the scenes of our photoshoot to see how it gets from the rack to Sag Harbor.

Step backstage with our Michael Kors sale on Thursday, February 4, at noon ET.

Buckler: Swashbuckling Design

Buckler: Swashbuckling Design

It’s been 13 years since British-born, NYC-based designer Andrew Buckler crossed the pond to call Manhattan his home. Recently, he took some time out of his busy pre-Fashion Week schedule to dish the dirt on his edgy approach to menswear.

Tell us a little about your background.
Buckler started in 2001 as a new form of denim for guys, but since then the collection of clothing has evolved and adapted. In the past we’ve created wovens, outerwear, shirting and jackets, but for our fall 2010 collection, we’ve branched into suiting. You can still buy the jackets and slacks separately. It’s exciting to have the brand grow.

You opened your flagship store in NYC five years ago. How has it been so far?
Incredible ... having my own store connects me directly to my customer. It means I’ve really been able to finely tune my product and realize areas I had previously overlooked. It also means I’ve been able to create the Buckler environment and present the clothes in the way I want.

Why New York rather than London?
I moved from London to New York in 1997. Always loved it – so I stayed and started my own line. To me New York is inspirational and optimistic, so it was natural to start it all here.

Hides to Seek

Hides to Seek

Sir and ma’am, please step away from the black leather sofa. You might think it’s a classic, but it’s a cliché, especially when paired with a glass table and polished-steel accents. So where should you rest your bottom instead? We at Gilt Home suggest the colorful seating from Elite Leather. Imagine swapping that bulky couch for a pair of fire-engine-red Flores armchairs with tufted seatbacks and turned legs: You’d add both a bright splash and a traditional touch to the room. Or go contemporary with the metal-framed, leather-topped Oliver stools designed by textile talent Lulu DK; they’d be perfect for a party and do double-duty as occasional tables. You could also try the fabric-covered Fortuna occasional chair, whose angled frame and clean lines would appeal to any Midcentury Modernist. So go ahead, settle into one of these beauties. You’ll be glad you did.

Find a seat at the Elite Leather sale on Thursday, January 28, at noon ET.

Jack Spade: Bag Inspection

Jack Spade: Bag Inspection

  • Cuan Hanly, the VP of Jack Spade, has already given us instructions on how to carry those mysterious man-bags (see the last Jack Spade post). But this time we were more interested in what we should keep in there. Cuan told us five items that every guy should keep at his disposal. (And here I thought I only needed my cell phone, keys and wallet.)

  • 1.     Compass
  • 2.     Pen knife
  • 3.     Zen and the Art of Motorcylce Maintenance... Read more
