Cute. Comfy. Created with 100 percent organic fabrics. That’s why we love Little Esop, which is on Gilt Kids today for the first time! These are clothes your little ones can really play in — at the park, on the playground, or in their very own playroom. We chatted with designer Judy Posey, who gave us the scoop on the brand, her favorite styles, and how to choose the perfect pieces for your kids.
What makes Little Esop unique compared to other children’s clothing brands?
How and where our clothes are made. We produce our clothes locally in New York City. Kids grow so fast, and we know it’s difficult to spend money on something your child can only wear for a few months. Because of this, we design vintage-inspired pieces that retain their style and wearability over the years. If a dress from 1945 still looks great on your daughter today, then chances are it will continue to hold its value over the next 50 years.
What is your inspiration for the clothes you design?
The kids! You can tell right away if they’re comfortable in the clothes we make. The best thing for us to see is a kid in our clothes running around and getting into all kinds of trouble! We are all big fans of finding the perfect middle ground between form and function.
What do you love about designing children’s clothes?
The process. Watching the collection come together, working with our pattern maker, and seeing the samples come to life is so much fun. There is nothing better then seeing a new style on a kid for the first time — it always looks ten times better on a smiling, happy kid than it ever did during the design process.
Any tips for moms on how to pick the best clothes for their kids?
The best style advice I can give is this: Kids will look best when they feel comfortable. When they don’t feel great in what they’re wearing, they make it very clear, often by just taking off their clothes! Beyond that, it’s important to invest in pieces that are really going to last (this holds true for parents, too). We put a lot of research into the organic fabrics we use each season, but we want parents to take the next step by simply buying less clothes.
What are your favorite three items from the Gilt sale and why?
Battleship Romper: We love the wide legs on this romper! It’s great for staying warm inside on a cold day.
Paperplanes Dress: This is a staple for any season cause it’s so easy to wear. We wish it came in our size!
Puzzle Cardigan: Great for layering over just about anything. We can’t find an outfit this little cardigan doesn’t improve!
