People.com Editor Talks Kids’ Style

Some people may not admit this, but we have no shame: We love a good celebrity fix. That’s why we read People.com’s Moms & Babies blog — we can’t resist a good scoop on who’s preggers and which adorable outfit Suri Cruise just stepped out in. Editor Shanelle Rein-Olowokere (who is rocking a baby bump for the third time) took time out from her busy schedule to give us the dish on haute mamas, the hottest trends for kids, and her best advice for moms-to-be.

Which kids trends are you loving right now?
Oh, where do I start? Now that I’m expecting my third (a boy!), I’m definitely paying more attention to baby style trends for boys. I’ll always favor more classic designs, so the nautical trend is an all-time fave. But I also love edgier looks like the punk-inspired outfits (think plaid pants paired with concert tees and suspenders) that Gwen Stefani’s sons Kingston and Zuma wear. For girls, I love pretty party dresses in bright, mod prints (much like Diane von Furstenberg’s new children’s collection for GapKids) paired with fun metallic sandals or ballet flats.

Now that you’re expecting (yay!) what is your must-have maternity staple?
Fitted striped tops, cardigans, skinny jeans, and T-shirt dresses have been my mom-to-be mainstays this time around. Unlike when I was pregnant with my first two kids (my oldest is 17!), there are so many cool maternity brands available. Now you can pretty much maintain your pre-pregnancy style without spending loads of money. And with the creation of belly bands, you can even rock some of your pre-pregnancy jeans during the whole nine months. I haven’t given up my wedges or mid-heeled shoes as long as they’re comfortable. I’m kind of like Jessica Simpson in that way. They definitely help elongate your silhouette especially as you gain some new curves.

Which celebrity mom inspires you most and why?
Hands down, Jessica Alba. She does such a great job of balancing her public life as an actress with being a committed mom, and she does it with such great style. Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her not look good, whether she’s on the red carpet or hanging at the park with her husband and kids. Plus, I love her dedication to making a difference in the baby market by launching The Honest Co., a line of eco-friendly body care, cleaning, and baby accessories.

What’s the best piece of advice about motherhood you ever received?
Thankfully, I’ve learned a lot from my own mom. Whenever I get too stressed or overwhelmed, she always reminds me to just go with it because everything will work out. The second best piece of advice I’ve ever received: Don’t take yourself too seriously. As all moms know, being a mom is hard work so the less pressure you put on yourself, the more effective you’ll be.

What is your secret to managing mommyhood and life as an editor at People.com?
I wish I knew the secret. But seriously, it’s all about being organized. While at work, I do my best to focus on day-to-day tasks, as well as long-term planning so my to-do list doesn’t become too overwhelming. And when I’m at home, I create and stick to a schedule that keeps my family all on the same page. But that doesn’t mean that a few things don’t fall through the cracks, and I’ve learned that that’s okay. Plus, my two oldest children (Amhara, 17, and Masai, 10) are more independent so I try to get them more involved with helping out at home, etc. so everything doesn’t fall on their dad or me.
