Our bump-chic buyer, Tiffany, often looks beyond U.S. boarders when seeking out the best brands. When she discovered Australia-based Fillyboo, she knew the Gilt moms would love it: “The flow-y pieces are creative, comfy, and chic,” she says. “It’s hard to find maternity clothes that have the three Cs.” We chatted with Fillyboo’s founder and creative director Pippa Henderson, who gave us some style advice from down under. Plus, she reveals how she came up with that cute brand name.
Gilt: Why did you start Fillyboo, and how did you come up with the name?
Pippa: Fillyboo began in 2004, just after the birth of my second son. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t absorbed in a fashion magazine, however having babies sort of put an end to that. Instead I would imagine my own designs and sketch them out when the boys were in bed. I would always draw the model pregnant — I am so fascinated with pregnancy! I was taking a break from my graphic design gig, so it was the perfect time to start Fillyboo. The brand is named after my Grandma — her name was Beulah (“Boo”) and Fillyboo just popped into my mind.
Gilt: What makes your maternity designs different?
Pippa: I spend half the year living and working on the tropical Island of Bali and the other half in a quiet beachside suburb on Sydney’s northern beaches. My designs combine the boho and effortless vibe of beachside living with Sydney’s edgy street-chic. The result is an outfit that transcends from day to night with very little effort, and you can feel confident that your style is just as it was before you were pregnant, if not better!
Gilt: What are some shopping tips for women looking for maternity clothes this summer?
Pippa: You can’t really go wrong with a maxi dress. This season there are many shapes out there — I particularly love the hi-lo hem. I love the idea of different belts that work above or below the bump. It’s so much fun to play around with different silhouettes and find which styles suit your new shape.
Gilt: Choose your favorite item from the sale and tell us how you’d style it.
Pippa: Summer is the perfect time to throw your baby shower and I would wear the Gypsy dress in lilac to mine. I designed it with a sunny garden or beach setting in mind. Imagine fairy lights, paper lanterns, hydrangeas and peonies galore! With this dress, you could go barefoot, wear sandals, or even sport ankle boots for a rock-chic touch.
Gilt: What’s your best piece of advice for women sporting a baby bump?
Pippa: Have confidence that you’re beautiful, even if you don’t feel it! Some days can be hard when you don’t feel yourself, especially in the heat, but just make sure you have a few flowing pieces in your wardrobe that can be easily accessorized.
