Pressing Questions | Odyn Vovks Austin Sherbanenko

Pressing Questions | Odyn Vovk's Austin Sherbanenko

by Hamish Anderson

They say it's always sunny and 76 in Los Angeles but that doesn't mean there's no darkness in the city of angels. Odyn Vovk, the cult fashion label by 23-year-old designer Austin Sherbanenko, is full of zip-heavy artfully constructed clothing. Since his first collection launched Odyn Vovk — pronounced ohdin vahk — in 2009 Sherbanenko has become the beloved black sheep of fashion. As he prepared for Fashion Week, we spoke to the designer about his influences, education and decidedly goth sensibility.

Where does the name of your label come from?

It means “one wolf” in Ukranian; it’s in memory of my Ukrainian grandfather, who escaped from a Nazi labor camp and brought his family to the States via Ellis Island. A wolf hunts to maintain its existence, and does everything and anything to keep its family alive: it’s about self-reliance. From the beginning, my label has been me figuring it out on my own—no-one else was helping me, I learned everything on my own.

Brands You Should Know | Beta Unit

Brands You Should Know | Beta Unit

By Hamish Anderson

Although Beta Unit is located in a sunny surfer’s paradise (Encinitas, California), there’s a dystopian slant to many of their wares. The hoodies, graphic tees and jeans from their Epic Garbage collection—which we’re selling now on Gilt Man—are often distressed, or dyed with innovative techniques that make them look like they survived a nuclear holocaust. The eye-catching placement of unusual flaps and buttons on many pieces makes the wearer look as if he’s ready for anything the future might throw at him—including the start of Fall, in the case of the intricately-stitched hoodies with storm flaps. As the name suggests, Beta Unit’s designers are inspired by ‘80s technology and computer graphics, but the results—wax-coated denim, super-soft T-shirts with half-hidden pockets—look as futuristic as they do retro. Beta Unit may be a young company (the first season was Spring 2009), but they use unexpected details and novel fabrics with a confidence that suggests they’re growing up fast.

A Peek Inside George Clooney’s Killer Briefcase

A Peek Inside George Clooney’s Killer Briefcase

by Tyler Thoreson

In The American, which hits theaters today, George Clooney plays Jack, a very private, very stylish gent who happens to make his living as an assassin. Like most on-screen killers, the man knows how to wear a suit (Zegna, in this case), as well as how to accessorize. But there are moments in life—even the life of a professional killer—where carrying around a silencer-equipped handgun just won’t fly. In such circumstances you need the right attache case, like this hard-sided number one from Raldo Raffa, which has a supple leather handle, a full suede lining—and a very handy hidden compartment designed to hold all manner of deadly implements.

Want one of your own? You’re in luck, as starting today at noon, Gilt will be selling the very case Mr. Clooney carried in The American (weaponry very much not included), along with many other covetable wardrobe items from the film, including the Zegna suit George himself wore while shooting. Even better, 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated by Gilt to the American Red Cross International Response Fund.

Click here for full details on the sale, which starts today at noon ET.

How To | Avoid In Grown Hairs While Shaving

How To | Avoid In Grown Hairs While Shaving

By Hamish Anderson

The advent of the botanical-enhanced shaving concoctions, an appreciation for classic shaving paraphenalia and cutting-edge technology — see Hommage's sharp (and sharp-looking) razors and beaver brushes on sale now on Gilt Man — has all but eradicated the knicks and cuts that plagued prior generations of clean-shaven gents. But the ingrown hair — that foul follicular foe — is not so easy banished. In search of answers on how best to avoid them, we called some of America’s best barbers for their advice on how to keep things moving in the proper direction.

Our Experts

Shorty Maniace , better known in downtown Manhattan as Shorty The Barber.

Aiden Gill , proprietor of the best barber shop in New Orleans

Martial Vivot , the man behind Martial Vivot, Salon Pour Homme, one of New York’s top men’s salons

Richie Cuts , a mainstay of the Lower East Side institution Frank’s Chop Shop

And Now, a Few Words on Fabric (Or, What Your Suit Should Have in Common with a Racehorse)

And Now, a Few Words on Fabric (Or, What Your Suit Should Have in Common with a Racehorse)

By Joshua David Stein

After a couple decades lost to oversized shoulder pads, droopy lapels, and billowy trousers, a new generation of designers has helped introduce a new generation of guys (yourself among them, perhaps) to a radical concept: A suit, even an off the rack suit, should fit like it was made just for you. But not all suits are cut from the cloth. Literally. Since we're running a sale featuring suits by Luciano Barbera, one of masters of fabrics (his are made at his father's mill in Briella Italy and stored in caves) we asked Barbera's U.S. market head Michael Sestak and our own Chris Wong for some tips.

The Story of the CHRISHABANA Squid

The Story of the CHRISHABANA Squid

There is actually a Chris Habana behind the acclaimed CHRISHABANA jewelry line. We're selling the latter tomorrow on Gilt Man (along with some great Generic Surplus sneakers) but we checked in with the former today. We asked him to pick his favorite piece in the sale and tell us what inspired him. You might be surprised.

Company of Wes How We Do: An Explanatory Powerpoint

Company of We's "How We Do": An Explanatory Powerpoint

Company of We designers Christopher Crawford and Jayzel Samonte founded the label in 2009 in order to offer affordable clothes that don't stint on style while still being gentle on the wallet. Their collection of double-breasted blazers, cashmere coats and summer shirts — on sale here tomorrow at noon — communicate an air of stylish leisure but we got our hands on a hilarious Powerpoint presentation that takes you behind the scenes to a manic land of dogs, electronic cigarettes and the makings of a label.

The Strida Bicycle Film Festival

Starting tomorrow at noon, we're selling Strida Bikes on Gilt Man. If you haven't heard of them, let's go ahead and remedy that right here and now. Stridas are strikingly and spectacularly foldable bicycles which were originally designed by Mark Sander in the mid eighties. They look like rolling modernist sculpture on wheels -- which is fitting, since the original design was Sander's thesis at the Royal College of Art in London. (You can see the original thesis here.) To celebrate the sale — and the bike — we've curated a mini film festival. Enjoy.

The Propr Guide to Mens Style

The Propr Guide to Men's Style

In 2008, former Original Penguin creative director David Bedwell got together with a couple of his friends to create Propr, a casual menswear line. It just so happened that his friends were musician Ben Harper and actor David Arquette. Two years later the label has grown exponentially. We toured the Propr factory on 36th Street in New York City and chatted with Bedwell about the importance of "made in the USA," the dangers of going into business with your famous friends, and the Propr way to dress.

The Martin Greenfield Experience

By Tyler Thoreson

Anyone with at least a passing interest in a) men’s fashion and b) the Internet has probably heard of Martin Greenfield. Over the years, the legendary tailor – he’s been making suits in Brooklyn since 1947 – has graced the pages of myriad publications, from The New York Times to GQ , as well as countless blogs including this one , this one , and this one , all of which paid homage to the living legend (and suitmaker for the likes of Band of Outsiders and Rag & Bone) by embedding Galen Summer’s eight-minute short film about Greenfield and his commitment to the long-troubled neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn.

To celebrate the launch of the Gilt + Martin Greenfield line of suits – which was the brainchild of Gilt MAN head buyer Christopher Wong, and which goes on sale Thursday, July 15 at noon ET – I paid a visit to Greenfield's legendary factory. My goal was simple: To illustrate the inspiring level of craftsmanship – all done right here in NYC, no less – that goes into every piece of clothing Greenfield makes.

Plus, well, I needed a new suit.

Fred Perry: From Lawn Tennis to London Punk

Fred Perry: From Lawn Tennis to London Punk

By Joshua David Stein

In world gone crazy for critter-adorned polo shirts, there’s none cooler than the one adorned with the laurel wreath. So how did an emblem of posh English style  become such a symbol of downtown cool?

The Ultimate Preppy Soundtrack

The Ultimate Preppy Soundtrack

Preppies love music and they love a certain type of music. Preppies do not, generally, listen to hardcore bands like Hatebreed , though that band is from New Haven, nor to hip hop like Peanut Butter Wolf or Madlib , though both are compelling. No, the preppy ear is attuned to the mid-range frequency, music that is neither too loud nor too aggressive. But make no mistake: This isn't easy listening meant to heard whilst sitting, playing Jenga. Preppies love dancing to this music in wondrously strange and compelling ways. So what's on the Ur-Preppy playlist? Well, it starts with Phil Collins, that's for sure, and includes prep rock bands like Vampire Weekend, nostalgic faves like The Beach Boys and, of course, Hall & Oates. It's the musical version of Sperry Topsiders, madras shorts, and purple polos and it rocks.

Visit our The Preppy Handbook sale today, 7/13, at noon EST
