The Gilt Insider Guide to the Perfect Day in London

London’s calling this summer! From the Diamond Jubilee to the Olympics, is there a city in the world that can rival the British capital’s buzz at the moment? Gilt.com has teamed up with Burberry to bring you the ultimate wardrobe to wear while traveling in London, so you’ll know just how to live like a local during a day out taking in the sights of the city. Shop the Burberry: Your Passport to London event on Gilt.com on July 18, starting at noon ET.

But what to do while the sun is blazing high over Big Ben? Read on for an insider’s take on what to do in London for a perfect day (or three!) in the always-cool capital.

Start with a stroll through Kensington Gardens, which just happens to be the location of the Burberry Prorsum show during London Fashion Week. The Serpentine Gallery is a spectacular contemporary art space within the park, and this year’s pavilion designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei is a must-see. Don’t forget to check out the Royal Albert Hall across the way to see if there is a good gig on for later that night. The gardens have belonged to the royal family since 1689, so prepare to feel like you’re slipping back in time.

Take in more British history by visiting the venerable V&A museum, for centuries of apparel and accessories along with decorative arts. The exhibition of the summer is the swoon-worthy “Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950,” with pieces worn by famous Brits alongside off-the-runway confections.

If a traditional museum is more your speed, visit the Tate Britain. Iconic pieces in the permanent collection include Auguste Rodin’s “The Kiss” and Marchel Duchamp’s “Fountain.” If contemporary art is more your bag, walk over the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern to take in the first major retrospective of YBA Damien Hirst in Britain.

Oh, and we bet you want to do a spot of shopping too, right? London is a famous fashion city for a reason. Head to Regent Street, the site of the soon-to-be-opened Burberry flagship store, for designer boutiques galore. If you fancy a bit of High Street fast fashion to take home with you, brave the crowds at Oxford Circus. And don’t miss the other beautiful Burberry boutiques in Knightsbridge, Bond St, and Burberry Brit in Covent Garden.

And no day in London would be complete without high tea! Sip elegantly from the finest china while nibbling on scones and clotted cream at Claridge’s, or sample one of 17 types of tea in the Palm Court at the Ritz, another London institution.

The Gilt Insider Guide to the Perfect Night Out in London

You’ve traveled to London in high style, spent the day checking out the best sights (thanks to our recommendations here on Gilt Insider), and now you need the ultimate night out in Europe’s hottest capital city. Oh, and you need a plush bed at a fabulous hotel on which to rest your weary head at the end of the night as well? Gilt.com has you covered with suggestions, and Burberry has the perfect wardrobe for your night out on the town. Check out the Burberry: Your Passport to London event on Gilt.com on July 18, starting at noon ET, and peruse our picks of what to do and where to stay in London.

A hotel that combines fabulous food, fun drinks and chic rooms is a must in London. At the top of our list is the Grazing Goat, a charming, eight-room boutique hotel and delicious gastro-pub — the hottest food trend in London, of course — all in one. If you’re feeling more like a Sloane Ranger, head straight to the luxe Cadogan Hotel, where the interior is as posh as the Knightsbridge neighborhood in which it resides. Don’t miss the “Great Taste at the Cadogan”, where top food critics collaborate with head chef Oliver Lesnik on temporal tasting menus.

If you want to be in the thick of the Theatre District, check into the Covent Garden Hotel. The musical Chariots of Fire is just beginning previews and it’s sure to be a hot ticket, especially with Olympic fever sweeping the city! And if you get to the theater early, make sure to check out the Burberry Brit store in Covent Garden.

Or spend some time in buzzy Soho at the Dean Street Town House. The rooms are as high-design as the bar is clubby and warm — and we hear that Bloody Mary Sunday is a can’t-miss!

Have you worked up an appetite yet? Head to The Wolseley or The Delaunay for an experience that hearkens back to the best of grand European fine dining (both restaurants are from the team that brought London The Ivy and J. Sheeky, among others). If you’re more of an adventurous eater, try the “nose-to-tail” cuisine at the award-winning St. John Bar and Restaurant.

You really can’t visit London without having a pint or two (or four) at an authentic British pub! Head to The Punch Bowl, the second-oldest public house in Mayfair, which was given a new life by co-owner Guy Ritchie.
