5 Questions for…Charlotte Ronson

From launching her first collection C. Ronson at the age of 23 in 2000, Charlotte Ronson has gone on to create multiple clothing and accessory lines, all with her signature downtown cool imprinted all over them. And now, her latest launch is a beauty line, exclusively at Sephora, with products inspired by her famously fabulous crew, including DJ sister Samantha and pals like Mindy Kaling and Abby Elliott. We are thrilled to be featuring the line on Gilt.com along with a curated selection of Charlotte Ronson clothing, so you can get the look head to toe. Shop Charlotte Ronson on Gilt.com on August 7, starting at noon ET, but first, read our exclusive interview with the NYC designer on what makes her tick.

Q: What inspired you to do a beauty line? What did you feel was missing from the market that you’re able to bring?
We have been partnering with Sephora for my runway show for the past few seasons and they have always done an impeccable job translating the look of my girl on the runway. So it was a natural progression to work with them to create a beauty line together. They are one of the world’s leading beauty brands and I feel so lucky and honored to work with such a driving force in the beauty industry. I had always wanted to expand into beauty, but I knew I wanted to be able to translate my design aesthetic in an authentic way. I like an understated beauty and my line represents that. They seamlessly transition from day to night, and are uncomplicated, portable, and easy to use for an effortlessly chic look. You still feel like you, but just enhanced.

Q:What surprised you the most about working in beauty?
I used to buy make-up solely for the packaging and now I am actually intrigued by the enhancing and beautifying effect.

Q: Do you think about your beauty collection as you design and vice versa? How do they complement each other?
Yes, when I’m designing a collection I think about the overall look and feel of who my girl is on the runway. Obviously, the clothes are very important but the hair and makeup are just as crucial in creating the finished look.

Q: Where do you see the beauty collection and your brand in general expanding to next?
I’m excited to continue our partnership with Sephora and expand the line! A Perfect Mess Beach Hair Spray is one of our best sellers, I would love to continue to develop in this area.

Q: Who are your beauty icons and why?
Women like Kate Moss, Lauren Hutton, Jane Birkin, and Bianca Jagger are my beauty inspirations. They have an understated and natural beauty.
