Spring’s biggest trend is, well, as plain as black and white–literally. The classic color combo popped up all over the runways–at Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, and Alexander Wang, just for starters–and is making its way to the red carpet, the streets, even the office. So how do you wear it without looking like a referee or worse, a waiter? Take notes.
1. Add a shot of bold color. Is there a better canvas for splashing bold turquoise, coral, and fuchsia on than basic black and white? Start with a graphic print (like these chic shorts by Winter Kate, $49), then add a pretty punch with a look-at-me hue.
2. Double your dose. What goes best with black and white? More black and white, but of course! Offset a patterned skirt (this one from Narciso Rodriguez is $399) with the crisp combination of white top and tailored black blazer. This idea also applies to prints–stick with the same simple, color-free palette, and the mix-and-match options are endless.
3. Top things off with an accent. Still intimidated by such a bold fashion statement? Test the waters with an accessory, like these tuxedo-inspired Tabitha Simmons shoes ($299) paired with your favorite LBD, or Kenneth Jay Lane’s crystal earrings ($59) accenting a pastel cashmere sweater.
