Consider the pieces designed by Eddie Borgo—CFDA winner, fashion world darling, and re-definer of what “luxury” means in the jewelry space—the markers of a modern It girl. Diane Kruger, Sienna Miller, and Rihanna are all fans, and obviously, so are we—the line returns to Gilt today, and to celebrate, we asked the designer to share some of his inspiration in the mood board above (vintage Linda Evangelista? We’re sold!) and in the interview that follows:
StyleFile: Where do you generally turn for inspiration?
Eddie Borgo: Art, architecture, geometry and form—paired with clever engineering.
SF: What’s the most unexpected source you’ve been inspired by?
EB: I recently re-visited the jewelry collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London—they hold over 3,000 jewels from ancient times to present day. I was surprisingly not drawn to the contemporary jewelry, I was really fascinated by the 19th century pieces. At that time in jewelry design, the focus turned to the past and goldsmiths attempted to revive ancient techniques that imitated archaeological jewelry. The pieces were elaborate, and the compositions were complex.
SF: Where do you generally sketch? Any favorite places in NYC or beyond?
EB: I sketch at my studio, at home, a lot on the plane when traveling, whenever I have a free moment. My sketchbook is usually filled with many ideas that I want to get onto paper before I forget them.
SF: Who are your muses?
EB: I am most inspired by the women who surround me in my life; unique and beautiful, elegant and educated, steadfast and inimitable, evolving and human.
SF: If you could see any woman in the world wearing your jewelry, who would you choose?
EB: Any woman who is a true lover of jewelry.
