Stour Appetizer Plates:
Earthy elegance defines Canvas' abundant collection of handmade housewares, furnishings, and lighting. Launched in 2005 by British expats Harriet Macdonald and Andrew Corrie, this NYC-based boutique label creates streamlined ceramic bowls, mugs, and plates, glassware, flatware, and kitchen accessories such as jars and cutting boards, as well as industrial metal cabinetry. Canvas strives to use sustainable materials such as reclaimed woods and recycled fabrics to create its warm, artisanal aesthetic. Its collections lean toward muted colors, organic shapes and natural materials, resulting in artful yet practical pieces: A ribbed tumbler quietly stands out in an ultrasoft blue hue; a round chopping board is display-quality, and a shallow soapstone bowl is nothing less than fine sculpture. All told, these elevated basics perfectly complement a huge range of design styles. Social consciousness is a big part of the picture as well: Canvas supports fair-trade work practices and donates a portion of its proceeds to nonprofit groups.
