Canadian twin brothers Dan and Dean Caten moved to NYC in the mid-‘80s to study and work in fashion, and then jumped to pond to Milan in 1991 for stints with major players like Versace and Diesel. But not long after, the brothers Caten decided to strike out on their own. They launched Dsquared in 1994 with a menswear collection that blended downtown, urban edge with sharp Italian tailoring and a healthy dose of wry wit—and quickly found they had a hit on their hands. The brand became a favorite among fashion-forward celebrities and urbanites almost immediately, and despite more than 15 years on the scene, it’s popularity remains intact. Now, though it maintains the brashness that marked its early years, Dsquared has tempered a bit. Recent collections are more mature and sophisticated, but still bear the Catens’ unmistakably adventurous signature.
