Fred Perry’s iconic polo shirts set off the sportswear-to-streetwear phenomenon: the brand has long been an integral part of the British underground scene. Today, it offers a wide range of clothing, shoes and accessories for men, women, and kids, from sweaters to sneakers to woven shirts to plaid wool dresses. The Fred Perry polo, with its iconic laurel logo, was launched at Wimbledon in 1952 by tennis superstar and proto preppy punk Fred Perry (who, incidentally, also invented the sweatband); the polo shirt quickly spread to other parts of youth subculture, beginning with its adoption by Mods in 1959. More recently, the Fred Perry Subculture label has kept the musical connection alive, while a collaboration with the late, great Amy Winehouse produced several sought-after collections that also maintain the fashion-music lifeline: the Amy Winehouse for Fred Perry trench coats, bowling shirts, polos and leopard print shirt dresses have become as iconic as the brand itself. Other star collaborators, from rock band No Doubt to tennis player Andy Murray, have also left their mark on the British brand, while Belgian design maverick Raf Simons has most recently put out a sharp, mod-inflected collaboration -- think varsity jackets to complement polo shirts and chinos.
