Since its 2006 debut, the men's footwear brand Generic Man has garnered praise for its innovative mash-ups of modern, minimalist design and old-fashioned craftsmanship. Company founders Kevin Carney and Brandon Day spent six months touring shoe factories in Italy before settling on a facility in Porto, Portugal — home to cork, port, and several generations of master cobblers — to produce its wares. The result? Chic “Wingman” brogue shoes, chukka boots, and suede saddle shoes, with nary a logo to be found. The older sibling of Generic Surplus, Day and Carney's clothing label, Generic Man offers the same understated style and unmatched versatility as its younger brother, but with a more sophisticated vibe. Generic Surplus has collaborated with the French couture label Comme des Garçons on Shirt (a line of slip-ons and lace-up sneakers in bright primary colors and neutral hues) and with Obey, the fashion label started by Shepard Fairey (the artist behind President Obama's “HOPE” campaign poster).
