Why to buy: This family owned producer makes the roundest, most nuanced Prosecco we’ve tasted—there’s nothing tart about it. And, named a “Best Value” by Food & Wine (it’s about $17 a bottle) this half-case is what we keep on hand for hostess gifts and impromptu celebrations.
Nose, palate and pairing: Aromas of apple, apricot and melon. On the palate, this lively, refreshing wine finishes with touches of sweetness, smoke and minerals. Serve it as an aperitif with salty tapas or a platter of charcuterie; or, in the form of a cocktail with a splash of pomegranate juice or bitters.
Backstory: “Extra Dry,” is often misleading as these wines are usually a bit sweeter than Brut due to a touch of residual sugar that makes for smooth and balanced wines. Beyond crafting quality wines, the Fantinel family produces some of the finest ham in Friuli. The company, Testa & Molinara, is the oldest brand of prosciutto in the commune of San Daniele.
