Characteristics: Koonunga Hill has gained a reputation for its vivacious fruit and flavor since its first vintage in 1976. Voluptuous and spicy in classic Australian Shiraz fashion, it has welcome structure and spine thanks to premium Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. It’s simply fabulous with any food with a bit of smoky char, including lamb, venison and game meats. Creamy Thomas Hyland Chardonnay has evolved in the eleven years since its first vintage. Winemakers have dialed down its oakiness, bringing to the fore the clear fruit typical of the Adelaide climate—the birthplace, in 1844, of all Penfolds wines. This modestly-priced wine often includes fruit from Penfolds’ top white wine, Yattarna. It is fantastic with roast chicken and simple poached white fish.
