Being an ardent fan of Bruno Deconciliis and the wonderful wines he makes near Paestum, one of the largest Greek ruins in Italy, in the province of Prignano-Cilento, I bee-lined for Salerno following VinItaly 2005. It was getting late by the time we arrived, and with stomachs growling we seized his recommendation for what would become one of my all-time favorite restaurants in the Paestum area, called Nona Sceppa. As we sat down, I was presented with a bottle of his Selim and I practically fell off my chair with the orange blossom, green apple flavors with a refreshing crisp finish. Love at first sip...this was something I had scoured high and low to find, and here it was. Bruno had been making it simply for fun and not export, which just goes into a countless list of reasons to love him.

Pairing: We love this sparkling wine with the foods famous to Campania (Naples, Sorrento, Salerno) – fresh seafood, grilled artichokes with herbs and breadcrumbs, and especially a simply delicious Pizza Margherita, thin and crunchy in crust, sweet with tomatoes, and dotted with fresh basil and melting fresh mozzarella.
The backstory: Winemaker Bruno De Conciliis is as passionate about jazz as he is about wine. The Selim (an anagram of Miles) was aged to the sweet sounds of Miles Davis’s trumpet echoing through the cellars as the wine slept.
