Inspiration struck founder Yves Chareton in New York City in 1979. He wanted to recreate the vintage shirts from the 40s and 50s he had found in flea markets in his native Paris. In time, he would find a manufacturer that believed in his line and Hartford was born. Chareton’s brand of vintage-inspired shirts was practically an overnight success. Sold by Ron Herman in Los Angeles, guys like Bruce Springsteen would order them in the dozens specifically for his concerts. Hartford inevitably became known for its quality fabrics, colors, and of course authentic fit and style. Eventually the collection expanded to include a full menswear line — from military coats cut with Savile Row precision to fatigues inspired by the U.S. Navy to prep staples. And Chareton didn’t stop there; by 2000 he was convinced by his faithful consumers to create the full Hartford “universe,” expanding into womenswear, childrenswear, and a vintage-inspired beach collection. Now you can find Hartford in stores all over the world, which is good news for the guy who’s looking to take his every day style to the next level.
