Judy Ross is a New York–based designer and artist. Traveling in India to work as an independent textile designer, she developed a passion for the centuries-old hand embroidery technique known as chain stitch, used by people in the Kashmir region to embellish shawls with traditional paisley and floral patterns. She lived on a houseboat on Upper Dal Lake while collaborating with the master embroiderers to develop a line of impeccably stitched contemporary wool scarves. From those scarves, her product line has expanded to home textiles: pillows, rugs, fabric by the yard, bedcovers and wall hangings. In 2008, Judy Ross Textiles began producing furniture pieces such as stools, cubes and screens.
Dramatic designs, rich colors, and hand-knotted wool are the hallmarks of Judy Ross' line of custom contemporary rugs. Choose from graphic prints and natural motifs like leaves, flowers, and vines. Looking for just an accent? Her striking hand-embroidered, chain-stitched wool pillows and handmade throws add a touch of elegance to any room.
Make like a world traveler by filling your home with these globally inspired textiles and tabletop items. Start with Couleur Nature’s floral-patterned Kantha throws, which combine a Provençal sensibility with Indian block-printing techniques. Add texture with Airedelsur’s Campo cowhide picture frame (a treasure from Argentina), and then light things up with Jardins du Jour’s Shinto Jar lamp, inspired by the arts and traditions of Japan.
Color, detail, materials, textures—all of these elements make Judy Ross' handmade textiles so artful. Go for one of the Tibetan-wool-and-silk rugs, offered in a variety of contemporary graphic prints. And finish off a sofa with a wool-and-linen throw or a brightly hued accent pillow.
