In 1916, Keds was so on top of its game that it came up with the ingenious term “sneakers” and forever changed how we refer to our walking shoes. (The silent rubber soles on Keds’ canvas-top shoes make them perfect sneaking-around footwear.) Keds have been a consistent favorite ever since, drawing praise from the likes of screen legends Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe for its classic Original Champion shoes, slip-ons and other styles. Besides sticking to basic white and black, Keds regularly revamps the old-school vibe of its collection by experimenting with fresh colors, materials (leather) and textures and collaborating with top designers such as Nanette Lepore. With its women’s, men’s and kids’ shoes still getting frequent mention in trend-watching publications like Elle, Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily, Keds will surely be kicking around for at least another 100 years.
