Bret Polok's aesthetic may draw from Pop Artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Jim Rosenquist and Andy Warhol but his silkscreen paintings reflect a more ambiguous state that is firmly rooted in his political and social views as well as his formal training as a streetwear designer and artist. Living in Bali has given Polok a personal insight into the destructive power of capitalism, war, religious conflict and poverty, his work drawing from a life lived on a paradise island that relies on affluent tourists and their dreams of cheap sex, drugs and consumer hippiedom. It is in this crack that lies between West and East, rich and poor, political and social, state and corporate that Polok pours his imagery into, each painting representing the visual juxtapositions that lie at the heart of his life; rich and poor, past and present, beauty and death, shopping and war, ...the big drivers for him are the usual suspects - sex, money, war, power, greed, life, death, tin gods and hotrods.
