In 1972, Hawaii-based surfers Gerry Lopez and Jeff Shipley began crafting surfwear they could actually surf in—think board shorts in comfortable cotton that stopped well above the knees — as well post-pipeline duds like soft tees and tanks. For a while, Lightning Bolt gear was seen on every beach around the world. Then, in the early ‘80s, the brand was bought out, and for nearly twenty years it languished in the States. That changed in 2009, when the newly relevant brand relaunched under new ownership. Now based in SoCal and produced in the U.S., Lightning Bolt offers swim trunks and casual gear in old-school styles that you don’t have to be a surfer to love.
