The three young surfer dudes who founded Maui and Sons had initially set out to conquer people’s taste buds, launching Maui’s Chocolate Chip Cookies in 1980. But one too many burned batches led the trio to rethink their business strategy and switch from homemade sweets to clothing inspired by Southern California’s laid-back, sporty lifestyle. Owned by businessman Richard Harrington since 1989, Maui and Sons designs adult-size and kids' board shorts, bikinis, and other apparel done in bright, bold colors emblazoned with the company logo — which still resembles a chocolate chip cookie, in honor of the brand's origins.
You’ve booked the flights, you’ve booked the hotel, now it’s time to get your wardrobe in order. Think bright, ocean-ready boardshorts and trunks from surfer-friendly brands Hurley and Maui and Sons, plus a slew of tees and tanks to complete your beach-bum look. Get it right, and the locals won’t even realize you’re not from around there.
With sharp colorful designs—multi-colored sharks on black and white backgrounds, silhouettes of palms against a neon sunset—this company’s signature board shorts, breezy windbreakers, and button-downs embody SoCal style. A broad swath of simple shirts with the same streamlined beachy designs are great for places where no shirt, no shoes equals no service.
Sharks with shades and cookies with cred — that will give you a taste of the gutsy images on tap in this sale of Maui and Sons’ distinct surf duds. These board shorts and T-shirts have a variety of cool logos, ranging from the slinky Palm Girl to the tribal False Idols to the (relatively) minimalist Light Bright. But the sharks are a common refrain, as is the cookie logo that looks back to Maui and Sons’ earlier life as a cookie company.
