A pioneer of the current boom in classic Americana-inspired menswear, Michael Bastian is a New York City-based designer known both for his eponymous label and his work for industry heavyweights like GANT, where he helms the GANT by Michael Bastian line. Born in Lyons, New York in 1965, Bastian got his start in fashion designing menswear for Bergdorf Goodman. He branched off on his own after realizing that the clothing he and his friends wanted to wear – traditional yet fashion-forward menswear sewed from high-quality fabrics and made with an eye for longevity – wouldn’t exist if he didn’t design it himself. Bastian creates collections for men looking for preppy yet rugged clothing that provides the perfect blend of fashion and function; his take on slim-fit oxford shirts, fine cashmere sweaters, chinos, shorts, pants, suits and more is growing increasingly influential both at home and abroad, with collaborations with Uniqlo, Havianas and vintage-style sunglasses brand Randolph Engineering rounding out the designer’s already-brimming portfolio. Bastian’s win of the coveted CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year Award in 2011 cemented his spot in the fashion firmament.
