modern alchemy
Modern Alchemy founder Douglas Little uses his own version of sensory manipulation to concoct candles that transport users to the mysterious opium dens of 19th-century London and to the fragrant Corcovado mountain of modern-day Rio de Janeiro. Cordova leather, musk, pine needles, and black tea are among his palette of scents that he employs to recall real (and imagined) moments and places. All of Modern Alchemy’s long-burners, votives, and diffusers come beautifully packaged—some with satin ribbon and others in black boxes with gold script (reminiscent of Little’s signature line, D.L. & Co). The company’s stationery and other home items also have an air of the dark and lush, with a hint of Edwardian undertaker that’s so fashionable today.

Try Something New: Diffusers
Don't be afraid to step out of your candle comfort zone — it's time to expand your horizons and try diffusers. "I used to be skeptical of diffusers, thinking the scent would be overwhelming," says Katherine, our home-fragrance buyer, "but now I have one in every room in my apartment. It's a great way to add a subtle burst of freshness to any space." (Also, unlike candles, you don't have to snuff out a diffuser before you leave the house... so you'll come home to a great scent every day.)
Candles Up to 80% Off
These luxe scents have extremely un-luxe price tags: Refresh your home with a new fragrance or two, without making a big financial commitment.
Soaps & Scents Feat. Ebb & Flow
This selection is anchored by Ebb & Flow’s made-in-NYC, artisanal soaps — they're way different from your average bar. Plant-based essential oils are the foundation of these scents, which range from bracing (Brown Sugar Fig, Sweet Pea) to calming (Lavender Flowers, Chamomile Neroli). The candles take the same tack: natural essences in inventive combinations (like Tea Sage Clove Aloe).
Pretty Lights: Candles Starting at $15
Why not try a new fragrance for spring? Refresh your home with a new fragrance or two, without making a scary financial commitment. The candles on offer here blend fresh, bracing scents with sophisticated (and eminently gift-able) packaging.
