Ray Ban, maker of legendary sunglasses and eyeglasses, has a style stable that includes iconic shades silhouettes like the Wayfarer, Aviators, Jackie Ohh and the Clubmaster. The brand was founded in 1937 by Bausch & Lomb, who were approached by the US Army Air Corps to develop army pilot sunglasses. Pilots were reporting intense headaches and altitude sickness caused by sun glare; the newly invented Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses, with their gradient lenses and metal frames, protected their eyes. Soon, the functional sunglasses became fashionable as well, particularly with the introduction of Ray Ban Wayfarers in 1952; the plastic frames and gray lenses were a hit with the Hollywood set: James Dean, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and many others wore the sunglasses both in movies and out on the town. Musicians (Bob Dylan, Bob Marley) and other famous folk (John F. Kennedy) were fans, too, and throughout the 70s and 80s Ray Bans were seen on all manner of celebrity faces – including Tom Cruise’s, in Risky Business and Top Gun. Today, Ray-Ban sunglasses remain classic yet stylish options for the discerning person, with styles like the Laramie and Meteor, as well as optical choices, guaranteed to stand the test of time.
