• A popular instrument during the Middle Ages, the Psaltery was depicted in various forms in manuscripts and carvings. Brought to England during the Crusades, the Psaltery is thought to be based on a North African instrument, the Qanun. By the 18th century, it had developed into other instruments: the Hammered Dulcimer (struck with hammers) and the Harpsichord (fitted with a keyboard mechanism).
