As a young boy growing up in Pittsburgh, Uncle Milton Toys cofounder Milton Levine enjoyed collecting ants in glass jars and observing their behavior. In 1956, Levine fondly recalled his childhood memories after spotting an ant mound during a Fourth of July picnic and soon set about creating both the Uncle Milton Toys company and its first product, the Ant Farm: a transparent ant habitat that has since achieved iconic status. Today, Uncle Milton Toys produces the Ant Farm Revolution (a modernized formicarium featuring a light display) and many other science-related toys for kids, including the Moon in My Room (a wall hanging that displays the 12 phases of the moon), the Solar System in My Room (a light-up sun surrounded by orbiting planets), the Rainbow in My Room (a rainbow projector), the Star Theatre Pro (a home planetarium), and “Horrible Pets” (remote-control tarantulas, roaches, and other creepy-crawlies). The company’s collaborations with the Star Wars franchise, the Jim Henson Company, National Geographic, and other prestigious brands have helped it become the science-toy leader.
