If you like Velour’s subdued take on modern basics, you’ve got founder Per Andersson’s grandmother to thank for it. Back in 1997, Andersson was looking through his grandma’s old clothing shop — in business for 50 years, before it shuttered in the mid-1980s — and decided to take advantage of all the dead stock clothing at his disposal. He and a few friends launched Nostagi, a shop that offered new gear alongside the old. By 2002, Nostalgi’s success had inspired Andersson & Co. to launch their own line of men’s and women’s apparel. Since releasing its first collection in 2005, Velour has grown into a global brand — selling its effortlessly tailored tunics, dresses and other clothes everywhere from Japan and the U.S. to its home base in Gothenburg, Sweden.
