The "Y" in Y-3 stands for avant-garde Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto; the "3" represents Adidas’s three signature stripes. The “Y” stands for Yohji Yamamoto, the “3” represents Adidas’ three signature stripes and the “-“ signifies the link between the two. October 2002 saw the birth of the most influential cooperation in sport and fashion to date with the launch of the Spring/Summer 2003 Y-3 men’s and women’s collection. The collaboration between renowned Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto and the authentic sports brand Adidas has revolutionized the industry, creating a new category in fashion. Adidas represents sport, Yohji Yamamoto represents design, both symbolize true craftsmanship, and together they have developed the future in sportswear. Yohji Yamamoto’s approach to a confident urban style combined with the mountaineering look transcends to heavy outdoor puffer jackets for men and colourful wool layered tartan tailored jackets and full skirts for women. Light to heavy jersey knits and Gore-Tex cut in Y-3’s signature look produce timeless, sporty basic pieces in cool blue tones and warm red and yellow hues. Signature pieces, such as wool and cashmere shawls, printed t-shirts as well as select accessories feature inconspicuous and inspirational messages from Yohji Yamamoto himself. Since September 2004, Global retail success and growing demand from consumers has led Y-3 to open its own monobrand stores. In Tokyo, Yohji Yamamoto’s city of residence, the first Y-3 flagship store is located close to his own signature store. Additional stores opened during 2007 in Beijing, Manchester, Paris and Miami. The first Y-3 flagship store in New York opened in February of this year with an additional locations in major cities across the USA, Asia and Europe to follow, making Y-3 a highly anticipated and exciting addition to Gilt Groupe.
