Job Description
Gilt Groupe’s primary data systems run on Postgresql (version 8.3). Today’s system is growing rapidly and requires very high levels of availability. The future data strategy for Gilt Groupe continues to leverage the latest in open source RDBMS technologies while expanding into alternative storage solutions (distributed key value stores).
Gilt Groupe is deeply committed to the open source Postgresql community. Team members have spoken at Postgresql conferences and Gilt Groupe is one of the sponsors of the hot standby project under consideration for version 8.5.
This position is ultimately responsible for the integrity of our high-volume databases and improving the overall system to increase fault tolerance. The position involves both administration activities supporting mission-critical products and architectural skills contributing to the design of next-generation applications. The position is highly technical but involves a day-to-day communications with business customers and partners.
Responsibilities
• Implement and manage PITR and warm standby to meet data backup and standby database needs over both LAN and WAN
• Evaluate and implement hot data replication strategy (e.g. SLONY or competing tools)
• Systematically evaluate and tune individual Postgresql parameters to increase throughput and minimize data loss
• Interact directly with the open source community to further usage, knowledge, and capabilities of Postgresql database
Required Skills & Experience
• Passion for extremely high quality software application development
• Expert knowledge of RDBMS concepts including query and data model optimization covering indexing, bitmaps, query plans, data file organization, etc
• Deep experience of alternative technologies (Oracle, MySQL, Key value stores, etc)
• Interest in / experience deploying software in the cloud.
• Work with developers to understand applications and operational system parameters and contribute to engineering designs
• Deep experience working with large data warehouses.
Education
• BS or MS in Computer Science
