Sr. Platform Engineer


Company Background:

Gilt Groupe provides access, by invitation only, to Men's, Women's, Children's, Beauty, and Home coveted fashion and luxury brands at prices up to 70% off retail. Each sale lasts 36 hours and features hand selected styles from a single designer. The business model, based on urgency and scarcity, offers extraordinary goods at incredible prices, but only for a limited time. All of these sales occur daily at noon, driven by daily email reminders and alerts to a private membership. Most of the hot items are sold within the first 10 minutes, with the bulk of sales occurring within the first 90 minutes.

Position

This position reports to the V.P., Platform and Architecture.

Technical Environment

Java, Ruby, JRuby, JavaScript, AJAX and Cloud Computing
Database Environment: PostgreSQL, alternative persistence stores like Project Voldemort

Experience in high-performance, transactional environments is a significant plus.
We like open source – we use it and we participate in projects – and we like transparent and open development processes. We’re not afraid to use non-mainstream technologies if they get the job done.

We use a blend of technologies, languages and architectures and aren’t afraid to explore new ideas and take risks.

Key Responsibilities

As a hands-on Senior Software Engineer for Gilt Groupe on our platform team, you’ll help develop and maintain the scalable data and services platform upon which the Gilt Groupe sites are built.

We’re looking for people that are smart, self-motivated and interested in technology.   
Candidates will have:
•           Experience in a full software development life cycle from initial design to deployment
•           At least 5 years experience in developing, delivering and supporting production-quality software, with a preference towards infrastructure and systems
•           We have no hard requirement for programming language expertise, but our preference is Java, C++ (and then others) in that order
•           An interest in using open source technology, as well as an interest in participating in open source projects
•           Experience with building or working with distributed, network-connected systems
•           Experience with relational databases (with non-relational a plus)
•           Good spoken and written communication skills
•           Strong supportive team orientation

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or related degree
