Although Beta Unit is located in a sunny surfer’s paradise (Encinitas, California), there’s a dystopian slant to many of their wares. The hoodies, graphic tees and jeans from their Epic Garbage collection—which we’re selling now on Gilt Man—are often distressed, or dyed with innovative techniques that make them look like they survived a nuclear holocaust. The eye-catching placement of unusual flaps and buttons on many pieces makes the wearer look as if he’s ready for anything the future might throw at him—including the start of Fall, in the case of the intricately-stitched hoodies with storm flaps. As the name suggests, Beta Unit’s designers are inspired by ‘80s technology and computer graphics, but the results—wax-coated denim, super-soft T-shirts with half-hidden pockets—look as futuristic as they do retro. Beta Unit may be a young company (the first season was Spring 2009), but they use unexpected details and novel fabrics with a confidence that suggests they’re growing up fast.
