Our very own tailored clothing correspondent Gay Talese began his career as a peewee sports reporter for Ocean City High’s newspaper. Throughout his long and illustrious career, the man has written probably millions of words about sports from his account of Louis v. Patterson to a profile of Liu Ying, the Chinese soccer player who missed the decisive penalty kick in 1999′s World Cup. This book, The Silent Season of A Hero (the title comes from a tremendous 1966 essay forĀ Esquire about Joe Dimaggio), assembles some of the man’s best sports writing as well as several hitherto unseen essays.
