The Chatwal, New York

Sant Chatwal, the Clinton-connected father of playboy hotelier Vikram, has staked his own claim on a stateside hotel with this namesake five-star property in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. The Chatwal is housed in an iconic, Stanford White-designed building on West 44th Street that was last home to the Lambs Club, Broadway’s 136-year-old version of Soho House: Chef Geoffrey Zakarian now helms a restaurant onsite by the same name. The building has been given more than a new coat of paint: it’s been re-imagined by Thierry Despont (who’s worked with clients from Claridge’s to Calvin Klein) as a Deco-flavored hideout heavy on the leather, tinted mirrors and lush, low lighting.
