After focusing on residential projects for a while, Ian Schrager returns to the hotel business with this sleek new property, the first in a global series of mid-range resort-style offerings in urban centers that he’s creating with Marriott. You shouldn’t hold the corporate affiliation or the less-than-trendy Waikiki locale against the Edition, however. The property is chock full of cool touches like an outdoor movie theater that mimics a retro drive-in, and a speakeasy-style bar hidden behind a secret passage in the lobby. It also has its own private lagoon, which is landscaped with sand imported from other Hawaiian islands.
