Brands You Should Know

Generic Man

If you've ever wondered what bench-made Oxfords would look like if they were designed in California and built in Portugal, here's your answer.

L.A.-based Generic Man first caught the eye of the New York fashion crowd in September 2008, when the label provided shoes for Shipley & Halmos’s Spring 2009 collection, but the line began the year before, when Kevin Carney and Brandon Day saw a gap in the market for footwear that was luxurious in quality but not in price. The name, of course, is a misnomer, as you can see by checking out their shoes on sale now at Gilt Man. Generic Man’s Oxfords, high tops, chukkas and more—which are made in Portugal and Italy—often feature quirky details like contrasting toe caps on their dress shoes and perforated leather on their sneakers. The label’s founders spent six months in Italy sourcing materials, so you can be sure their classic but fashion-forward styles are built to last.
