Dover Street East

Three things you must do immediately after landing in London? First, take the Heathrow Express (English taxis are for suckers). Second, grab a pint, anywhere, no matter the time. And third, head to Dover Street Market. Rei Kawakubo’s retail destination offers all things Comme des Garçons, plus a breadth of labels found only within the walls of its six floors. What to do upon landing in Beijing may be a little more hazy. But last night’s opening of Kawakubo’s latest Dover Street-inspired shopping emporium, I.T. Beijing Market, has cleared up the picture. The 20,000-square-foot space houses all the variations of Comme des Garçons, along with like-mindedly vanguard brands like Rick Owens, Ann Demeulemeester, and Maison Martin Margiela. Perhaps a bit puzzling is the basement space, which serves as a BAPE boutique, at a time when Nigo’s stranglehold on the streetwear world has waned (much like the popularity of streetwear itself).
