Editor's Pick: Ramey & Arietta Wine Collections

Like countless other working stiffs, I look forward to those hard-earned moments when I can sit down in my favorite chair (or anywhere, really), exhale, and sip a good drink. It’s our time, however brief, to unplug and recharge; and mine is made all the more redemptive by my beverage of choice, which has filled that time with great-tasting sensory pleasure, but also with education and discovery: wine. As any dedicated wine drinker knows, that experience is only as good as the know-how and access afforded by your supplier. And there are important contingencies to consider. Namely, that for reasons of convenience (wine stores close early; the bottles are heavy) and cost (in the long run you’re going to pay more for a bottle you hastily pick up at the corner store than you are if you have a well-chosen case or two on hand), wine is best bought in bulk—and variety. All big reasons why I’m excited that Gilt is getting into the wine business, with a weekly series of smartly curated sales. Today it all begins with a group of small-production wines from the Napa Valley chosen by Porthos, a heralded California wine merchant. And if full-bodied California varietals aren’t your thing, Gilt will be bringing a different theme, and curator, to the equation each week. Think of it as your route to the wine knowledge—and the down time—that every man needs.

  1. Alejandro says:

There are few winemakers as revered by other winemakers as David Ramey. Ramey’s wines are not shy, to be sure, but they also come through as incredibly sophisticated. His Chardonnays are famous yes, but his Cabernets exhibit and exude a sexiness seldom found in the Golden State.
