Since this is our “Mad Men” sale, an exclusive with Banana Republic and a preview of what’s to come in stores, I know the expectation is for me to go with a slim-fitted suit or perhaps the herringbone fedora, two of the more recognizable leitmotifs of the series. But I’m going with the Mac jacket, and here’s why: the trench coat gets a lot of love these days—and for good reason—but I prefer a Macintosh. Named after the 19th-century Scotsman who invented a technique for waterproofing fabric, Charles Macintosh, the Mac is free of those distinctive trench elements, like the belt and the double-breast. As a result, it provides you with a trimmer silhouette, thus reducing your chances of looking like Columbo. This one is not without standout detailing though, like military epaulets and a back storm flap. Even the color, charcoal heather, is notable from breaking with the standard black. I can imagine Don Draper in one, storm clouds gathering overhead.
