I’ve been on a pretty serious watch hunt for a while now, for a serious watch, so let me get a little aspirational for a moment. We all know how essential a proper timepiece is, something you’ll actually want to hold on to for the long haul and pass along to junior some day (or buy another, if you pass on having a junior). This Rolex Stainless Steel Oyster Perpetual Date fits that bill nicely. Selected for us by Ben Clymer, founder of the horologist blog Hodinkee, the vintage piece (circa 1970) already has some character-building miles on it. It’s also got all the hallmarks of a Rolex: the automatic Swiss movement, the date magnification lens, the superlative chronometer certification. But what really caught my eye was the blue linen dial. Sometimes it reminds me of chambray, at other times denim, either way it settles the white face/black face dilemma with panache.
