There was some confusion going into this morning’s J.Crew show if the brand was sticking with their usual presentation style or doing an unheard of runway affair. That the question even arose is proof enough of how far J.Crew has come (more proof: Beyoncé came). This season saw a welcome injection of color, and even some whimsy, into their solid line-up of basics with a pair of slim shorts sporting a very Steven Alan-esque cuff of patterned lining and a tone-on-tone plaid patchwork blazer. But what really stood out for me, as it often does with Frank Muytjens’ creations, was the outerwear. In particular, this hooded jacket. A little bit Barbour (check the corduroy cuffs and collar), a little bit Engineered Garments, it was as much about where J.Crew is today as it was about where they’re headed.
