The first day of New York Fashion Week is usually fairly quiet. Engines are revving, editors are flexing and the race has barely begun. Fortunately for us, there was plenty to see this time around. Shades of Grey by Micah Cohen started us off for the week in the West Village. Although the clothes were good and the crowd was lively, the styling struck me more than anything else — it always makes or breaks a collection. Of all the tricks I saw there, the use of a printed hoodie as an accent piece was my favorite. It’s difficult to wear an all-over print without being loud, but when the print is subdued by a solid cardigan and a textured jacket, it all balances out nicely. It’s a new way to think of wearing something loud. Wear it proud — just don’t scream about it.
