“I’m happy to see the entire collection as one, because I feel like it tells a story — and the idea was ‘on and off the court,’” said Shimon Ovadia, co-designer (alongside his brother Ariel) of J.Press York Street. “When the athletes would go to see a game, they would actually wear their varsity jackets and it was seen as cool, so we tried to play with that notion”. The duo’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection took inspiration from two classic American pastimes — football and hunting — as well as old team photographs from the early 1900’s, and was presented at the Explorers Club, an Upper East Side establishment that, since 1904, has served as a hub for “adventure seekers, scientists, and explorers” from around the globe, as the boys told us.
“It’s tough for me to pick a favorite piece – really, I can’t,” said Shimon, echoing our own thoughts. “But, I have to say I love these football pants [below, left] that we created. What we did is blend a boxing pant with a vintage football pant and created a perfect piece with a wide, four-inch cuff, as well as padded quilting,” he explained, adding “if you were playing football, these would actually protect you.” We’re definitely feeling the heavy color blocking (in a duffel coat as well as multi panel chinos), not to mention the button-down gingham flannels, wool/silk repp ties and the shaggy dog sweaters. Who wants to play ball? We do.
