“We write pop songs,” says Ivan & Alyosha lead singer Tim Wilson, when asked to describe his band’s sound. He’s being a tad modest. The songs Wilson and his bandmates craft are pop songs, sure, but they’re also richly textured, melodic, and incredibly catchy — better than your average pop concoction. The Seattle-based quintet, which takes its name from two dudes in Dostoevsky’s Brothers Karamazov, has been getting accolades from all the right places, and we thought they’d be the perfect musical act to team up with to launch our new music series, in which we spotlight the music — and style — of some of our favorite up-and-coming bands.
The band, which also includes Tim Kim, Matt Yeates, Ryan Carbary, and Tim Wilson’s brother Pete, recently released its first LP, All the Times We Had (Dualtone), and have been playing to sellout crowds at top indie venues across the country. When they came through NYC, Wilson & co. were kind enough to swing by our Brooklyn studio to get kitted out in a few of our favorite indie-rocker-friendly looks, after which we all headed over to Bond Street in Manhattan for an impromptu performance of their first single, “Be Your Man,” which, as you’ll see, drew quite a stylish crowd. Check out the performance below, then shop our sale on Gilt starting Saturday, May 4, at noon ET to inject a little I&A style into your own wardrobe — and to download your own copy of their debut LP.
