In keeping up with the fine journalistic integrity that MANual is known for, I researched “Borstal” prior to this post as I’d never heard of it before. Apparently, a Borstal is essentially a juvenile detention center in the U.K. and India (which in this instance is an interesting reference given Generic Surplus is based in L.A.). So, immediately I’m thinking these canvas kicks are modeled after prison-issue footwear. Which makes sense, I suppose, though I doubt they’d be given laces for obvious reasons. Thankfully, you don’t have to do anything illegal to get your hands on these (or worry about getting shanked. I hope.). And with that dope print, it’s a great alternative to classic Vans Authentics or Tretorn Nylites (which, for the record, I still rock but variety makes me happy).
